José Castro: “Monchi is one of ours”

MADRID, 22 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president of Sevilla FC, José Castro, affirmed this Thursday that the former general sports director of his club, Ramón ‘Monchi’ Rodríguez Verdejo, “is one more” of the Nervionenses fans despite leaving that position and having signed for Aston Villa FC, where he will serve from this summer as president of soccer operations.

“These are things that happen,” said Castro before collecting the gold plaque of the Royal Order of Sports Merit (ROMD) corresponding to the year 2019. “He is one of ours. We can only speak highly of him, he has always been an important bastion in all the successes of recent years”, he added from the ‘photocall’ installed at the National Institute of Physical Education (INEF) in Madrid.

In addition, Castro was happy for the award given to the Seville club. “Super proud because this is a recognition of what the entity has achieved in recent years and also in a year like this in Europe. The entity in general, its employees, the staff, its coach and of course the fans deserve it” , commented on it.

“We have done enough merit to get this recognition. But at Sevilla we always go for more, we always want more,” he added, without assessing the draw for the 2023/24 League calendar that had been held a few hours before. “In the end we have to play everyone, so in that the calendar is a bit tricky,” he said.

The Sevilla president stressed that his club has been “many years achieving important successes” and “not only in Spain”, alluding to the seventh Europa League won last month against AS Roma in a penalty shootout. “Winning it isn’t difficult, it’s super difficult, but why aren’t we going to do it again”, he said about the ‘Eighth’.

Finally, and after the arrival of Víctor Orta to the position of sports director to replace Monchi precisely, Castro was confident for the future. “Let him continue with the successes”, he stressed when asked about what he had asked of Orta. “We are going to continue growing, without a doubt,” he finally stressed.
