The women’s national soccer coach, Jorge Vilda, acknowledged the difficulties they encountered against Denmark (0-1) to advance to the quarterfinals at Euro 2022, showing that they are a “challenging team” and that he is “delighted” to have now face the hosts England.
“The objective was to win, the bottom line was to go to the quarterfinals, we had to look for a goal to be calmer. It is what we have done, knowing that with transitions they could put us in danger, as it has been. The goal was in the 90′ and the tranquility has been for two more minutes added”, he said at a press conference.
The coach of the national team confessed points to improve, but celebrated being able to do so after passing the group stage. “Happy, satisfied with the pass to the quarterfinals. Points to improve: in the first half we were stuck, the traffic wasn’t going fast. In the second we improved, we created a little more danger, we controlled the transitions a little better” , he claimed.
“It will always be very difficult against a team that defends in a low block and with very fast players. We can compete in a better way, objective accomplished and congratulate the players”, he added, highlighting Sandra Paños individually, ” a great goalkeeper” who the other day “made a mistake” and this time “a great success” in a key action in the second half.
Vilda was also asked about the way to replace Alexia Putellas and about Wednesday’s game against England. “There are still players to come out of the interior left, if we can boast of something, it is midfielders. On each occasion we opt for what is best for the team. Each one brings something different to the team. We do not make it easy for rivals to analyze us” , he pointed.
The coach also highlighted Olga Carmona, in her first minutes, and Marta Cardona, scorer of the goal and an important piece as a footballer and a person for whom he was very happy. “Happy with the result knowing that Spain can improve,” he said.
“It could be the most difficult game you can have in the Euro. Seeing the level that England is playing, that they are the host, all the public in their favor, it is something that motivates us. We are a team of challenges. We love that they are against England in these quarter-finals and now it’s time to recover and know that we are going to face a clear candidate for the title”, he concluded.
