Jorge Prado wins in Türkiye and closes gap with Gajser in the MXGP World Championship

MADRID, 8 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Spanish rider Jorge Prado (GasGas) continues to dream of defending his MXGP world championship title after winning the Turkish Grand Prix this Sunday, a round of the Motocross World Championship.

The Galician was the best in Afyonkarahisar, where he arrived in great need after a bad weekend in Switzerland where the leader, the Slovenian Tim Gajser (Honda) increased his lead in the general classification, although now it was the man from Lugo who returned the blow to get to 14 points behind with two rounds remaining.

The Turkish circuit was marked as a theoretically favourable layout for Gajser, but Prado was able to turn things around in a weekend that started with a second place in the qualifying round behind the leader. However, Sunday did not start well and the reigning champion, although he was better than his rival, was overtaken by the Swiss Jeremy Seewer (Kawasaki) and the Frenchman Maxime Renaux (Yamaha).

In the last heat, the Spaniard’s Gas Gas came out ahead in what is Prado’s 15th holeshot of the season and from there he was able to dominate the heat, beating the Slovenian and the Dutchman Jeffrey Herlings (KTM), who is 39 points behind the rider from Lugo.

“I’m happy with the victory. The first heat was very complicated because in the first lap the zipper on my trousers came loose and in the last ten minutes the lens of my glasses came off. In the second, however, I started first and I was able to stay ahead of Gajser at all times and win at a good pace. I’m super happy with the victory, we’ve reduced the gap in the championship and we’re moving on,” said the Galician.

The Turkish event also saw the victory of Catalan rider Daniela Guillén, who became runner-up in the world championship because her rival, the Dutchwoman Lotte van Drunen (Yamaha), earned the necessary points to win the title.
