Jonas Vingegaard is crowned in the Dauphiné and accelerates for the Tour

Italian Giulio Ciccone wins the last stage

MADRID, 11 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) has won the 75th edition of the Critérium du Dauphiné after defending his lead in the general classification in the eighth and final stage, of 152.8 kilometers between Le Pont-de-Claix and Grenoble and in which the Italian Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo) has taken the last partial victory.

A month after starting his defense of the Tour de France title, Vingegaard had no problems on the last day of the race to maintain the more than two minutes of rent he had over the second overall, the British Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates), and finished in second position this Sunday, 23 seconds behind the winner of the day.

Ciccone, king of the mountains in the 2019 Giro d’Italia, was the protagonist of the day when he managed to escape in the Col de Porte from the group of four riders that he formed together with the French Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal Quick-Step) -this Sunday of birthday- and Clément Champoussin (Arkéa Samsic) and Belgian Tiesj Benoot (Jumbo-Visma).

After consolidating his escape, he alone covered the grueling ascents that lead to the Bastille Fort in Grenoble. There he celebrated his third win of the season, 23 seconds ahead of Vingegaard and 33 ahead of Yates.

In this way, the Dane became the second Danish cyclist to win the Critérium du Dauphiné, after Jakob Fuglsang in 2017 and 2019, before starting his title defense in the ‘Grande Boucle’. Yates, 2:23 behind, and Australian Ben O’Connor (AG2R-Citroën), 2:56 behind, completed the final podium of the French round.
