Jon Rahm withdraws from The Players due to illness

MADRID, 10 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish golfer Jon Rahm withdrew “due to illness” this Friday from The Players, the prestigious PGA event considered the fifth ‘major’, as announced by the organization shortly before the start of the second day in Ponte Vedra Beach (Florida).

Rahm, world number one, did not jump onto the American tour with his two world-ranked chasers, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, as scheduled. The Basque golfer had started the tournament on Thursday with a card of 71 shots.

The one from Barrika could not continue the assault on one of the most mythical tournaments on the Circuit, a favorite as a three-time champion this season, in the absence of more details about this “disease”. Now, both Scheffler and McIlroy can take the world number one from Barrika, the trio has been fighting since July 2021.

On February 19, Rahm won the PGA Genesis Invitational, his third victory in just a month and a half (Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii and The American Express), to regain the world throne he had last held in March of 2022.
