MADRID, 7 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Spanish golfer Jon Rahm, current number 3 in the world, will seek to emulate the Cantabrian Severiano Ballesteros in the number of wins achieved at the Acciona Open de España presented by Madrid, whose next edition will be played at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid from 6 to October 9.
Number 3, the titles won by the Spaniard in the 1981, 1985 and 1995 Open de España, have become the objective of the Basque golfer, who won in the 2018 and 2019 editions.
First classified in 2018 at the National Golf Center, the best a year later at the nearby Villa de Madrid Country Club, Jon Rahm returns to the Madrid course, designed by Javier Arana, with the intention also of equaling the achievement achieved by Ángel de la Torre in 1916, 1917 and 1919, a period in which golf was radically different from what it is today.
Later, in the four-year period from 1946 to 1949, Marcelino Morcillo inscribed his name continuously on the winners’ base of the Spanish Open, although in 1947 the lowest result was achieved by the amateur Mario González, ahead of the aforementioned professional Marcelino Morcillo. .
Jon Rahm faces other statistical challenges only within the reach of the best, one of them established by the Basque idol himself in the 2019 edition, when he equaled, with 22 under par, the lowest winning result in a Spanish Open, which Kenneth Ferrie had won in the 2003 edition, at that time tiebreaker champion against Peter Hedblom and Peter Lawrie.
The presence of Jon Rahm is a çaliciente for the tournament, integrated into the DP World Tour, championing the large group of Spaniards who will take part with the intention of succeeding the Canarian Rafael Cabrera-Bello, the best in 2021, in the list of winners.
Tickets for the Acciona Open de España presented by Madrid 2022 are now on sale, from 10 euros, on the official website of the Madrid tournament, the third longest running in Europe.
In 2021, the Acciona Open de España presented by Madrid gathered more than 40,000 spectators during its four days of competition, ending on Sunday with the victory of Rafael Cabrera-Bello in a play-off against Adri Arnaus.
