Jeff Hafley is leaving Boston College to coach for the Packers. He will not be back to coach Michigan State in September.
The Detroit Lions will have Jeff Hafley instead of Michigan State. Matt LaFleur, the head coach of the Green Bay Packers, announced Wednesday that Jeff Hafley, the coach at Boston College, will be in charge of the defense.
The game against Boston College is set for September 21 in Chestnut Hill. We’re excited for him to be in charge of our defense.” Hafley takes over for Joe Barry, who quit earlier in the month. Barry was in charge of the Boston Eagles for four years.
LaFleur said, “We are thrilled to have Jeff, his wife Gina, and their two daughters, Hope or Leah, join the Packers as well as the Green Bay area.”
Jeff has been a successful coach at every job he has held. He has a great track record of helping players grow at every level.
Hafley’s defense was ranked third in the country in 2021 for passing yards allowed (173.5 per game).
They were also ranked in the top 30 in the country for total defense, red-zone defense, first-down conversions allowed, third-down percentage terms, team passing efficiency, and defensive touchdowns.
In the ACC, the Eagles additionally recorded the lowest number of penalties and penalty yards. Before coming to BC, Hafley was Ohio State’s co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach in 2019.
While there, he was a finalist for the Frank Broyles Award, which is given to the best assistant coach in the country.
Hafley worked as an assistant coach in the NFL for seven years before coming to Ohio State. He worked for the San Francisco 49ers (2016–18) and the Cleveland Browns (2014–15).
In 2012 and 2013, he was a defensive backs assistant coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFL. In the year 2013, he was the secondary/safety teacher for the same team.
Before going to work for the NFL, Hafley was a college coach for 11 years at Worcester (Mass.) Technological Institute, along with the University of Albany, Pittsburgh, and Rutgers.
Jeff Hafley is leaving his job as head coach of Boston College to become defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers.
In four years, Hafley was in charge of Boston College and went 22–26. This past season, they went 7–6 and beat SMU in the Fenway Bowl.
Joe Barry was fired last week after three years as Green Bay’s defensive coordinator. The Packers confirmed Wednesday night that Hafley will take over for Barry.
“I loved my four years at Boston College,” Hafley said in a school statement. “The quality of the athletes that we recruit, the facilities, and the support from University and BC fans make this a great place to coach.”
I will miss the players who gave so much over the last four years. My wife Gina and I will also miss the people of British Columbia and all the friends we’ve made here.
After Maurice Linguist left Buffalo and Kane Wommack left South Alabama to work as an assistant coach for new Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer, Hafley, who is 44 years old, is the third college head coach to quit and become an assistant coach.
Because of his move, the coaching job market is once again open, and Boston College has the only open spot in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
We’re excited for him to be in charge of our defense. It’s possible that the NIL movement caused the first Power 5 leader to quit his job.
As an NFL secondary coach, Hafley worked for Tampa Bay from 2012 to 2013, Cleveland from 2014 to 2015, and San Francisco from 2016 to 2018. In 2019, he became Ohio State’s co-defensive coordinator along with secondary coach.
Packers coach Matt LaFleur said in a statement that Jeff had “an impressive track record for cultivating players at every level” and had been successful at every job he had as a coach.
Jeff Hafley, who used to coach at Boston College, was hired by the Packers as their defensive coordinator on Wednesday night. It is not often that a coach via a top conference willingly leaves their job to become a coordinator.
But it looks like the new rules for college football may have had a big impact on the choice. “He wants to become a coach game again in a competition that only cares about football,” a source said.
“College coaching has turned into raising money, not coaching, recruiting your team, and letting players move on.” It’s no longer possible to coach football. He went again to college for a lot of things that are no longer there.
In addition to recruiting, which is an important part of college athletics, instructors now have to get NO money from donors to get and keep athletes in the transfer portal, which can change quickly.
