Japan creates its first professional women's soccer league

Women's football has taken a giant step by announcing the creation of Japan's first professional league. Under the name of WeToo, in clear allusion to the feminist movement of Women's Empowerment in English (Women's Empowerment, WE), the Japanese Federation has announced this new project in order to further promote this sport in a country where women's football has been ingrained for many years .

The league already has its account Tweet
r under the name of (@WE_League_JP). The idea, according to the Japan Football Association (JFA), is to highlight the advantages of a society in which everyone “shines with diversity of dreams and way of life. Contributing to society through sports is an important mission for the sports world ”, assured the president of the JFA, Kozo Tajima.

For her part, the president of the JFA women's committee, Junko Imai, stated that the WELeague It will serve to “develop soccer among women from the grassroots to the elderly, and at the same time may contribute to the development of women's soccer in the world.”

The tournament, in which 6 to 10 teams will compete, will start in the fall of 2021 and will end in the following May. It starts like this two years before the 2023 Women's Soccer World Cup takes place.

Japan is on the final list of those selected to host the World Cup, along with Australia-New Zealand, Brazil and Colombia. The final election will be announced on June 25.
