The Spanish men’s basketball team, current world champion, will face Iran, the Ivory Coast and Brazil in Jakarta (Indonesia) in the first phase of the 2023 World Cup, which will be held between August 25 and 10. September in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia.
The team led by Sergio Scariolo, which started in the draw held at the Araneta Coliseum in Manila as the seed, was drawn in Group G, which will play its matches at the Indonesia Arena in Jakarta. The Brazilian team, number 13 in the FIBA ranking, is a priori the toughest opponent in a group that is completed by the Iranians (22) and the Ivorians (42).
Meanwhile, the United States will face Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Greece, Jordan and New Zealand in Group C at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila.
The first phase of the championship will be played between August 25 and 30 and the first two classified from each of the 8 initial groups will advance to the second phase. In case of overcoming it, Spain would face the first two classifieds of Group H, made up of Canada, Latvia, Lebanon and France.
In this second phase, the results obtained in the first are carried over. The top two teams from Group L, which will also be held in Jakarta from September 1 to 3, will advance to the quarterfinals. The final phase of the World Cup will be played entirely in Manila starting on Tuesday, September 5.
The president of the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB), Jorge Garbajosa, took the trophy won by Spain in the last edition of the championship, China 2019, on stage.
