“Insufficient Varane”

The afternoon was looking good for Manchester United in Bern. The Red Devils, after thrashing Newcastle in the 'I re-entered' Cristiano Ronaldo, they traveled to their first European outing against a rival with some danger, but, a priori, the easiest of the group they share with Atalanta and Villarreal.

Before the first quarter of an hour, Cristiano returned to 'justify' his return by making the 0-1. Bruno Fernandes, about 30 meters from the goal, launched a beautiful and precise pass with the outside seeing a break from Cristiano from the other band. On the 7th he attacked the ball, won the back of the entire defense and scored again for United in Europe more than a decade later.

They were all joys until Wan-Bissaka was sent off for a wrong kick. Solskjaer tried to adjust and took out Sancho first and Van De Beek at halftime to give Dalot and Varane in.. The Frenchman had a fateful night for his first time in Europe wearing a different shirt from Real Madrid.

Wagner raised a match with the Swiss team and won a prize. He enjoyed good chances and took advantage of two notable United mistakes. The first was from Varane. Elia appeared on the right to put a tense ball to the heart of the area. This bounced off Shaw and reached the small area, where Moumi Ngamaleu 'ate' Varane to make it 1-1. Lingard had an even grosser miss at 2-1 that allowed the comeback.

English is the most criticized by the international press, but Varane is not spared either. In L'Equipe they give him a 4 and qualify his match as “insufficient”. “He fell short in the tying action and a minute before he got an avoidable yellow because he took too long to give the ball to De Gea. An afternoon to forget,” they write.

In England, the national newspaper Daily Mail assures that Varane was “hunted out of place” in both the Helvetians and the Manchester Evening News gives him a 5 'scraping' in his evaluations although he declares him “guilty of the tying goal”. A bad first continental night in its change from white to devil's red.
