“Iker Casillas was moved to see his heart attack in the series; he had no idea what happened that day”

The story of Iker Casillas and his recovery process after the heart attack comes with Hang the Wings, the documentary series of six chapters of Movistar +. Its director Luis Fermoso shares with AS the keys to a sensitive shoot and a job that also points to the future.

You are an expert in Casillas. How do you see it? Change?

Yes, in terms of dates and experiences it validates me. I already have the third from Casillas at least. (Laughs). The main interview lasted four hours. We have recorded with him every month since the summer of last year. And there may be more than four hundred hours of recording. Taking into account that I have witnessed its most complex moment, added to the most complex of everyone's life due to the pandemic, I want to think that what I have seen is an exclusive moment. A person who has to recover from a heart attack, assume that football may end, that he has to withdraw like everyone else. Everything is extraordinary. Going down to the field, I have seen a very calm, calm, thoughtful and mature Iker. Heart attack, parenthood, almost forty years … There is a point of serenity within the chaos of recent times.

He knows himself a lucky guy.

He considers himself lucky for everything that has happened to him. He has had a heart attack at the age of 37 which is very unlucky, but even so he prefers the optimistic reading. He is also aware that he was able to stay there. If it happens to you one night at home, it doesn't matter.

Do you see him wanting to heal old wounds like leaving the club of his life?

“Iker Casillas is Superman for us; seeing that he couldn't weigh 30 kilos was hard”

Luis Fermoso

Yes. It is part of the process we are talking about. To calibrate or ponder what life has happened to you and the moment in which we are. There is a point of serenity and calm. And I would add sincerity. I'm not saying that it wasn't before, but we all know what athletes are like on a day-to-day basis and how when they stop and review what they have done. Casillas will talk about his departure in the fifth chapter. A global reflection, its memories and what it means today.

Any confession about your future or return to Real Madrid?

As a confession, if it exists, I won't be able to say it, but it has to do with a desire to stay in football. It is a very beast moment. He retired in August, he returns to live in Madrid … I don't know if he will return. I am led by the facts. This series does not have dribbles or camera decisions. He is very Iker, who is a very flat guy.

What testimonials reached you the most?

Sandro's, the security officer, who seems like a delicious character to me. But the one who beat me was Robben. His answer about the heads-up of the World Cup final is complete. It deserves all your eyes and time. I'm not going to remove a doubt from you. That people feel at home the same as I felt in the rough of the interview. I have also really enjoyed Toshack, Buffon, Piqué and, of course, Mourinho. The fifth chapter with him will be an enjoyment. It will be one of the most powerful for that storm of Classics.

Will there be reconciliation?

They are both at a point of tranquility. They are two grown-ups with something that happened to them and with a perspective of time that calms everything down. There is no reunion, but the two are very well and there is still time for a pinch. (Laughs).

What impacted Iker Casillas the most?

He was shocked and moved by how we recounted his heart attack. He has attended her heart attack. He had no idea what had happened around him. He had such a bad time those hours that he liked watching episode one. He also liked to see his performances as a Madrid C game from 99 that he did not remember.

You have a good memory!

Bestial. It has been one of the great allies of the documentation department. You talk about a stop and it tells you everything. Quarterfinals of the Cup, Eibar field, November 98. It tells you the minute! Wonderful for us because it is also narrating it to you.

“There is no Mourinho-Casillas reunion, but there is time for a pinch”

Luis Fermoso

Which stop is left with?

Robben's has a plus. That day we would have all married Casillas … Then the one that he does to Perotti is anthological, but he has one to Kovacevic in a Champions League game I believe against Olympiacos … Winning 3-2 in the final minutes he takes an incredible hand out of a volley in the small area.

How much will Casillas look like with a more political profile that aspires to the Federation?

There is a tour. If we have followed him for more than a year, he has to answer questions about whether or not he presented to the Federation. It will have a reflection. Is something important. I have seen him well. He argued what he wanted. It seemed like an option, a search for a professional tour.

How was the shoot?

We meet a super champion in a very difficult moment who did not set limits. We were with the most fragile Iker and then when he returns to be like a bull. In November they want to eat the world with high intensity training that some athletes without heart disease would not reach. And then when he is discharged. When I couldn't lift 30 kilos it's hard. For us Iker Casillas is Superman and we saw how he couldn't walk for ten minutes because he was drowning. For Iker, his last competition was to prepare for the last talk of the fit or the unfit. And he won it. If he is 23 years old, I think they won't stop him on his return. You are born with it. Trying to be the best. We were joking about his possible return and he told us one day that he thought he could return. It is the concept of competition. They are born with it. Trying to be better than the kid next to you and that transforms you in the positive sense. His rivalry with Caesar for example. At the time it was intense and explains many things. Or the final in Glasgow. Or the current moment. They need to compete.

“He did not set limits; he faced decision-making with the camera on”

Luis Fermoso

Why a documentary series and not a single documentary? Whose idea is it?

Casillas wanted to. I wanted to pick up your process. He has the feeling that his story can serve people who are going through what he has gone through. A documentary series was planned from the beginning. It is attractive to tell it like this. To simmer. You have time for each story to breathe what it should. I can stay in Glasgow, understand the rivalry with César, the penalties in Italy… In principle there will be no more episodes. In six we tell the whole story of Iker

Define the series.

It is the review of the most extraordinary goalkeeper that we have had in the most unrepeatable and extraordinary moment as well. It is not easy to gloss over a life like yours and even less in the context of a retreat. It is what marks the most. You have faced decision making with the camera on. It seems to me an exercise in tremendous generosity. A guy who has won everything, possibly the best goalkeeper in the history of Spain, has decided to radiograph his decision in a very intimate moment. The story offers a double speed. Attend Iker's present in his recovery and on the verge of a decision and, at the same time, another story to review a legendary story. Right now I am not at the goal I want to reach. It is so much time consumed in the positive sense that there is a point of north loss. There is a desire to finish, but also vertigo. We have learned how to make a documentary at home. Then facing the Movistar + file is terribly wonderful, but it crushes you. It has been an enjoyment, but also a suffering.

Maybe it's up to Iker Casillas to invite him to something …

(Laughs). With me that legend was not confirmed. Some fish that I have taken with him in Porto!
