“If Nadal and Federer hadn't existed, I would have won more titles”

Fernando González is one of the great rackets in the history of Chile. The former Chilean tennis player participated in the talk 'Tales that Transform' at the Universidad Santo Tomás de Chile in which he reviewed his career in the circuit.

A trajectory in which González, Olympic doubles champion in Athens 2004 with Nicolás Massú, He faced two of the great rackets of world tennis on several occasions: the Swiss Roger Federer and the Spanish Rafa Nadal.

A fact that González affirms that it deprived him of obtaining more titles, although at the same time he is proud to have shared a career with them. “I was in the most difficult generation in history. If Nadal, Federer or Murray had not existed, maybe I would have more prizes and more cups. Still, I feel like it was an enriching experience for me. “

The finals that González lost with Federer and Nadal

Gonzalez is not lacking in reason since, against both Federer and Nadal, he was on the verge of winning more titles. Against the Swiss, with whom he has a record of 1-12, González lost the final of the Masters 1,000 in Madrid and the Basel tournament in 2006 as well as the final of the Australian Open in 2007.

The statistics with Nadal also mark González's career, which ended with a 3-7 balance against the Balearic, who prevented him from winning the title at the 1000 Masters in Rome in 2007 and the coveted Olympic gold at the 2008 Beijing Games, where Nadal won the final 6-3, 7-6 (2) and 6-3.

González also reviewed his beginnings with the racket. “I started in tennis when I was 4 years old but I liked soccer more. Over time I fell more in love with this sport and had the ability to do things that other players took years to achieve “. He also wanted to assess the current situation of Chilean sports, which he sees better than before. “Chile is not a very athletic country, although it has improved in recent years. Representing them was always a great pride for me.”
