Iago Aspas apologizes for his “mistake” by throwing away the VAR monitor in the match against Sevilla

“I shouldn’t have channeled my frustration that way.”

MADRID, 5 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

RC Celta forward Iago Aspas has regretted his “mistake” on Saturday, by hitting and throwing the VAR monitor during the match between the Galician team and Sevilla FC at Abanca Balaídos (1-1), and has acknowledged that he did not He should have “channeled” his “frustration” in that way, all after the match referee rectified a penalty called on the light blue team in the last minute that could have given Rafa Benítez’s team three points.

“Yesterday I made a mistake. I shouldn’t have channeled my frustration that way. It hurts me because it is not the example I want to give to the smaller Celtic fans,” the Galician wrote on his official account on the social network X.

In the 96th minute, the Canary Islands referee Alejandro Hernández Hernández ordered a penalty in favor of the Vigo team after Sevilla’s Jesús Navas knocked down the Greek striker Tasos Douvikas in the area due to a grab. However, the braid went to the monitor after the Navarrese Eduardo Prieto Iglesias, responsible for the VOR room, asked him to review the play.

Finally, Hernández Hernández rectified his decision and annulled the maximum penalty. Prieto Iglesias has already been the protagonist of two other controversies linked to the Galician club this season, by annulling a goal by Jonathan Bamba against RCD Mallorca and by nullifying another goal by Jorgen Strand Larsen against UD Las Palmas due to a previous foul.

After learning the decision, Aspas hit the VAR monitor, which fell to the grass. However, the Canarian referee did not record the incident in the match report, so only the Competition Committee could intervene ex officio to sanction the Moaña footballer.
