The German defender Mats Hummels will play next season at Borussia Dortmund, after renewing his contract with the club, which expired on June 30, for one more season, as announced by the ‘black-and-yellow’ team.
“Borussia Dortmund and defender Mats Hummels reached an agreement this Wednesday morning to extend his contract for another year, which expires on June 30,” the team reported.
From the entity they celebrated the renovation of one of its figures and pillars. “I am very happy that Mats Hummels is staying at Borussia Dortmund for another year. He identifies very much with our club. BVB and Mats are made for each other,” said Dortmund general manager Hans-Joachim Watzke. .
Hummels made his debut at Borussia Dortmund in the 2007/08 season and since then he has played 13 seasons and 468 games wearing the BVB shirt, with a three-year break at Bayern Munich, his hometown. In the ‘black and yellow’ team, he has won two Leagues (2011 and 2012) and two Cups “2012 and 2021). “It is very good that Mats, with his experience and leadership, continues with us next season”, declared the sports director, Sebastian Kehl.
At 34 years old, Hummels continues to be one of the most important pillars of the team, in a 2022/23 season in which he has played, so far, a total of 37 official matches. “He is a very important player for this team, because he brings a lot in terms of hierarchy and leadership,” Kehl added.
Hummels himself also welcomed a decision he did not make “easily”. “It has been a long process of reflection. Now, at the end of the season, I can say: I am really willing to continue for another year”, he celebrated, already focused on lifting his third League. “From now on, the focus immediately returns to Saturday’s game against Mainz. An intense 90 minutes await us. After that, we hope we can celebrate something big together,” he added.
If Dortmund win their match, Hummels would enter the club of five players who have won the German championship three times with BVB to date, along with Helmut ‘Jockel’ Bracht, Wilhelm ‘Willi’ Burgsmüller (both 1956, 1957, 1963 ), Lars Ricken, Stefan Reuter (both 1995, 1996, 2002), and Sebastian Kehl (2002, 2011, 2012).
