Baskonia wins in Belgrade to consolidate the noble zone in the Euroleague

MADRID, 18 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Baskonia defeated Red Star (90-91) this Thursday on matchday 22 of the Euroleague, with a performance by Markus Howard, especially with his 17 points in the third quarter (32 in total), and another by Chima Moneke ( 13 points and 12 rebounds), to consolidate the noble zone in the classification.

Dusko Ivanovic's team, which was his home before returning to Vitoria in October, had the best version of a lethal duo. However, Baskonia trailed from the start and suffered until the last possession to go up 12-10 and consolidate its position in the playoff zone.

Howard's two fouls within three minutes disrupted Vitoria's plans, also taking into account that the visiting point guard had started plugged in. With the American on the bench until the second half, Baskonia found it difficult to function in attack and, furthermore, did not have a defense at the level of the Serbians.

The score went wrong for Ivanovic's team because of Yago Dos Santos' performance: 10 points in the first quarter and fulfilling in different aspects. Rogkavopoulos and Marinkovic gave the Blaugranas some air, but the Stark Arena barely sat down, dazzled by the actions of their team (30-20).

Moneke's entry from the bench took a while to work, imposing his power in the second quarter alongside Costello. Baskonia won the rebound, kept a good shot from the triple and minimized errors, but Red Star continued to hit, in a favorable exchange for the hosts at halftime (52-43).

The return to the locker room brought Howard back to the court with crazy enthusiasm. The American scored 17 points in the third quarter and, together with Moneke, gave Baskonia the comeback on the scoreboard (62-69). The Serbian pavilion did not remain silent and Red Star pushed for a heart-stopping finale with many decibels (83-84).

Giedraitis pushed the Serbs against his former team two minutes from time, but the last attacks were from the visitors with Howard and Moneke catching a golden rebound as the victory in Belgrade for the Basques. Baskonia becomes stronger in the tight fight for the playoffs while the Serbians fall behind.
