How it affects Felipe VI’s agenda if Pedro Sánchez resigns: this is how he informed the King of his decision

Pedro Sánchez’s announcement of the cancellation of his agenda to reflect on his resignation and whether he deserves to continue as President of the Government leaves us with several possible scenarios. It will be next Monday the 29th when he announces whether he continues to lead the Executive, after a Madrid court has opened proceedings following the complaints by Manos Limpies about his wife, Begoña Gómez, for alleged influence peddling and corruption in the business. Before making his announcement public, the president communicated it to the King. These are the new scenarios and the role that the monarch plays in the face of a possible resignation.

If he finally resigns, the next steps are those established by the Constitution. To begin with, a new call to the polls would have to wait, since the Magna Carta says that elections cannot be called until 365 days after the last electoral appointment. This puts us at May 30. From that day on, we would have to count 54 more deadlines, which puts us in July, Sunday the 21st.

Another scenario, that the position of President of the Government was assumed by a party colleague. This would imply opening a new consultation process with King Felipe VI to proceed with the investiture.

During this impasse, the Executive would be limited in its functions during that time. The possibility of Sánchez submitting to a question of confidence is also contemplated, in which the Government asks Congress for his support. At this point, the president may not obtain sufficient support from the Lower House. If this were the case, the process to invest a new president would begin, which implies new consultations with the King and the convening of a new investiture debate.
