Holland mourns Suurbier, member of the ‘Clockwork Orange’

Holland is in mourning. Wim Suurbier, legendary player of Ajax and the Netherlands team of the 70s (the mythical 'Mechanical Orange') died this Sunday, at the age of 75, after failing to recover from a brain hemorrhage for which he was hospitalized days ago. .

Offensive right back and representative of the best moment of Dutch football in history, Suurbier was part of the legendary Ajax between 1964 and 1977, when he completed almost 400 games. He was a partner of Johan Cruyff in the ‘ajacied’ set and in the national team.

At that time, the defender won three European Cups with Ajax (1971, 1972 and 1973). With the selection he played sixty games and was a starter in the finals that Holland played in the 1974 World Cup in Germany and Argentina in 1978.

After leaving Ajax, Suurbier played in Schalke, Metz, Los Angeles Aztecas, Sparta and San Jose Earthquakes, among other clubs.
