Hindley wins the Giro and Sobrero flies in the final time trial

BARCELONA, 29 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Australian cyclist Jai Hindley (Bora Hansgrohe) was proclaimed the winner of the 105th edition of the Giro d’Italia this Sunday after defending his lead overall in the twenty-first and last stage, a 17.4-kilometre individual time trial in the city of Verona, in which the Italian Matteo Sobrero (BikeExchange-Jayco) prevailed.

In this way, Hindley, 26, has become the first Australian to win a Giro d’Italia after beating Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz in the general classification. Thus, the champion of the ‘pink jersey’ reached the last day with a sentenced race after shining at the top of the Marmolada in the penultimate stage.

In the case of Mikel Landa (Bahrain-Victorious), the man from Alava had to settle for third position, returning to the podium seven years later, failing to intimidate a vindictive Carapaz, who at no time feared losing second place in the general.

Meanwhile, Sobrero broke the clock (22:24) and dominated the day. In this way, the Italian lowered the time of the Swiss Mauro Schmid (Quick-Step) by 1:16 and was proclaimed the winner of the last stage of the ‘Corsa Rosa’.
