high flying women

MADRID, 8 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

More and more are encouraged to take to the skies. Although they are still few, 5.5% of federation licenses in Spain in 2022, women are gradually joining the world of sports aviation, a discipline open to everyone and in which they are increasingly acquiring more weight. Thanks to them, sports aviation is no longer a no-go area.

From paragliding or skydiving to acrobatic flying, the Royal Spanish Aeronautical Federation (RFAE) offers up to ten different disciplines to which women are increasingly joining. “There is no limit of gender or age to enjoy it,” they highlight from the federative body.

One of them is Alex Moore Mayorga, head of Women and Sport of the Royal Spanish Aeronautical Federation. “Sports aviation is equal in origin and therefore recognition and respect is part of the DNA of each of our specialties. This diversity of disciplines and categories offers opportunities for young to senior talent and air sports are the most spectacular and exciting, both for the athlete and for the fan”, he highlights.

The RFAE has had a group of women for years, including pilots, technicians, judges and members of the organization, who try to contribute their experience in an organization that is increasingly committed to equality and which it values ”enormously”. the historical contribution of women to aviation sports, as evidenced by the creation of the Women and Sport commission.

Despite the fact that the license numbers are drastically lower than those of men, Moore sees “a positive trend” for the next few years. “We see that there are more and more female athletes in Spanish aviation. For example, in 2022, 5.5% of federative licenses in Spain were for women and at the beginning of the year, we are already seeing a positive trend in the increase in federative licenses competition since 9% of the licenses processed correspond to female athletes”, he highlighted.

“With more and more access to the disciplines and a continuous awareness that air sports are for everyone, women will have more and more presence in our sport. The challenge is to make ourselves known to those women who are interested in aviation and they have skills,” Moore concluded.
