Former Argentine soccer player Gustavo López joins the coaching staff of the Atlético de Madrid first team, led by Diego Pablo Simeone, according to a statement from the rojiblanco club issued this Wednesday.
The Argentine, who has worked as a sports commentator for the last 12 years, enjoyed an extensive sports career that spanned 17 seasons. He began his career in professional football with Independiente (1991-1995). In the 1995-1996 season he landed in Spanish football to sign for Real Zaragoza, a club in which he played 121 games and scored 16 goals.
His longest stage in Spanish football was in Balaídos, after signing with Celta in the 1999-2000 campaign, defending the light blue shirt for eight seasons in which he played 295 games, scoring 30 goals, and in which he won an Intertoto Cup (2000/01). His last adventure as a footballer was in the 2007-2008 academic year with Cádiz CF.
In addition, Gustavo López played for the Argentine national team from 1994 to 2003, playing in the 2002 World Cup, the 1997 and 1999 Copa América editions, and was part of the Olympic team that won the silver medal in the Atlanta Olympics 1996.
