Grimaldo signs for Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen

MADRID, 15 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish full-back Alejandro Grimaldo, now in the ranks of the Portuguese Benfica, will play from next season for the German Bayer Leverkusen, a club coached by Xabi Alonso and with whom an agreement has been reached until June 30, according to a statement.

“Bayer Leverkusen will strengthen its squad for next season with the Spanish left-back Alejandro Grimaldo. The 27-year-old player has been at Benfica Lisbon since 2016 and will go to Bayer for free in the summer, where he signed a contract valid until June 30, 2027”, announced the German entity.

Grimaldo, intended by, according to some information, Atlético de Madrid or Real Sociedad, will arrive for free at the German team as the Benfica player who has given the most assists this season (15). He is a key player in a Lisbon team that is just one win away from being proclaimed champion of the ‘Primeira Liga’.

“Alejandro Grimaldo is an agile, very strong and tactically very skilled winger. He is capable of scoring goals and has a lot of experience and class,” Bayer’s sports director Simon Rolfes said in a statement issued by the club. “We are pleased that we were able to convince Alejandro of our ambitious concept for the coming years,” he confessed.

For his part, the player himself, twice international under-21 with Spain, acknowledged that competing from next season in the Bundesliga is “an exciting challenge.” “I’ve played for a top European club for seven years, but I’m excited to now show my qualities in Germany,” Grimaldo stressed.

“It’s one of the best leagues in Europe because of the atmosphere and atmosphere in the stadiums. The fact that a Bundesliga club like Bayer made an effort to sign me fills me with pride. I’m sure we’ll get through some fantastic days together”, settled the winger, who will be under the command of the Basque Xabi Alonso, the cornerstone of the current project for the Germans, who has once again been fighting for European positions since the Spanish coach took the reins.
