Going over the Mets’ deal with the Brewers for Adrian Houser along with Tyrone Taylor

Going over the Mets’ deal with the Brewers for Adrian Houser along with Tyrone Taylor

He is 30 years old and served as a back-end starter as well as swingman on the Brewers. He pitched in 23 games (21 starts) in 2023, giving up 111.1 innings of work and striking out 96 hitters. His earned run average was 4.12.

He hasn’t been a great strikeout pitcher in the past. Instead, he relies on ground balls and is better than average at dodging barrels.

A fastball between 93 and 95 mph is the main pitch the righty throws, but he also has a slider, a curveball, and a changeup.

The Mets are considering Houser as a possible fifth or sixth starter in their rotation. David Stearns, President of Baseball Operations, knows Houser well from his time in Milwaukee. Houser is available for arbitration and is in the last year of his contract with the team.

In accordance with MLBTradeRumors, he will make $5.6 million, which is a good deal when you look at how much back-end starter pitchers are getting as free agents this winter. So far, that market is around $11 million to $14 million.

One way to look at Taylor is as a standard fourth outfielder. In parts of five seasons with the Brewers, he has hit.239,.294, and.451 in his career.

Taylor is in the initial season of arbitration, and MLBTradeRumors says he will make $1.7 million. The Mets will be in control of him for the remaining three seasons.

His slugging rate is what makes him most useful as an offensive player. His Isolated Power (ISO) of.212 would have put him 34th in baseball, between Mariners’ Julio Rodriguez and Tigers’ Spencer Torkelson, if he had sufficient at-bats to qualify.

Taylor is best as a fourth outfielder because he is fast and good at protection. It was the 86th fastest time for baserunners in 2023, with a sprint rate of 28.8 feet per second.

For defense, he can play any of the three outfield positions. In 2023, he was +2 outs above average (OAA), which shows that he has a lot of range.

Taylor also has a good arm; he hits the ball an average of 90.4 mph while in the outfield, which is about the same speed as Starling Marte.

The Milwaukee Brewers sent right-hander Adrian Houser or outfielder Tyrone Taylor to the New York Mets on Wednesday in exchange for minor game pitcher Coleman Crow.

Adrian has been a starter in the major leagues before and will help us this year by adding to the strength of our rotation.

Following David Stearns’ departure from the Brewers to run baseball operations for the Mets, this was the first trade between the teams since 2008.

Stearns became general manager of the Brewers at October 2015 and left his job at the end of the 2022 season.

Spokesman Stearns said, “We are happy to have Adrian and Tyrone join our team.” The outfielders we have now are better because Tyrone has a wide range of skills and can play all three spots well.

There were 129 games and 97 starts for the Brewers from 2015 to 23. Houser, who will be 31 on February 2, went 31–34 with a 4.00 earned run average.

He played in 23 games last year and started 21 of them. His record was 8-5 with a 4.12 ERA as well as 96 strikeouts in 111 1/3 innings.

From 2019 to 2023, Taylor, who will be 30 on January 22, hit.239 with a.294 on-base percentage, 41 home runs, and 136 RBI for the Brewers. In 81 games last year, he hit.234 with a.267 on-base percentage, 10 home runs, and 35 RBI.

Matt Arnold, head of the baseball organization for the Brewers, said, “Those guys have been on a lot of winning teams.” “We’re grateful for what they’ve done here.”

We have a lot of exciting outfielders and young pitchers, so we’re just looking at this from a different angle.

After winning the NL Central title, the Brewers are changing their staff even more with Houser’s departure.

The Brewers need to find an alternate for Brandon Woodruff, a two-time All-Star who hurt his shoulder and might not be able to pitch this season. He was not offered a deal.

Corbin Burnes, winner of the NL Cy Young Award in 2021, is still under team control for one more season before he can leave for free.

Freddy Peralta, Wade Miley, or Colin Rea are also back for the Brewers. Because of a shoulder injury, left-handed pitcher Aaron Ashby lost the whole 2023 season. They hope to have him back.

In 2023, outfielders Sal Frelick, Joey Wiemer, and Garrett Mitchell all played their first full seasons.

Jackson Chourio, one of the best baseball prospects, signed a $82 million, eight-year deal this month and is likely to start 2014 in the big leagues. They also have Christian Yelich, who was named NL MVP in 2018.
