Girona assumes its “part of responsibility” in the incidents of the derby against Espanyol

MADRID, 3 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Girona FC has assumed its “share of responsibility” and has apologized to the members and fans affected by the incidents that occurred in the Montilivi stands in the Catalan derby on Saturday against RCD Espanyol, events that killed two people arrested.

“Girona FC would like, first of all, to apologize to all its members and fans who suffered these incidents and who were unable to enjoy what a football party should be as normal, as are all the games played in our stadium. The club assumes its share of responsibility in the facts, regretting that not everyone behaves in a civic and respectful way inside a stadium,” he said in a statement.

The incidents were mainly concentrated in the visitor’s zone and in the adjacent stands, in North Goal, with fights and throwing objects. The events ended with two people arrested. Girona beat the blue and white team 2-1.

“Girona FC takes note of this experience for the future, aware that our priority must be to guarantee the safety of our fans and preserve the festive nature of a football match,” the entity stated.

In addition, he insisted that he reinforced “by 30% the security device” in relation to other matches, and stressed that the club delivered 306 tickets for the visiting area to the Barcelona club, which sold them directly to its fans.

“Apart from these tickets, 125 exchange tickets were delivered -the same ones that Girona FC received in the match held at the RCDE Stadium- and another 50 for payment, all courtesy and which, in accordance with LaLiga regulations, the visiting club must distribute among its staff, coaching staff and players, as well as sponsors or institutions,” he added.

He also recalled that Girona members had “a preferential period of nine days” to buy tickets. “When the sale was opened to the rest of the fans, and assuming that many of the purchases that ended up selling out the tickets came from potentially RCD Espanyol fans, he warned in a statement that, as indicated by the rules for accessing the stadium, having The attitude of a visiting fan in the local area could lead to expulsion if this entailed a disturbance of public order,” he said.

The club also detected “the possible resale of some seats” and began, as was done in the game against Barça, “the corresponding procedure.” “Two people ended up in custody and a dozen more were expelled from the stadium for having caused disturbances to public order. Girona FC has opened a disciplinary file against some fans and has open processes to identify others who maintained uncivic attitudes,” he said.

“Girona FC understands that the fans of any team have the right to be able to attend a match of their team in Montilivi and enjoy together with our fans, in a civic and respectful way, a football party, just like our fans do on trips accompanying our players”, he concluded.
