Girona, a reliable team in their first league game

Girona starts this Saturday, against Las Palmas at the Gran Canaria stadium (19:30), a ‘new’ League. The rojiblanco dressing room faces these last 11 games as “A World Cup or a mini tournament” and in the last ten years it has become customary to start scoring. The numbers allow them to be optimistic. in the first matches of the last ten campaigns they have only lost one: in the league debut of 2011-12 against Elche in Montilivi (1-4). The rest, five draws and four wins.

The team of Pep Lluís Martí is aware that if they want to assault the first two positions in the table they cannot fail and the objective is to continue extending, but in the form of victory, the good streak they accumulated before the break by COVID-19. The people of Girona had seven games without knowing defeat and this Saturday a sprint race begins stumbling is prohibited. Returning to the competition with a win would be vital for the confidence and morale of the group to increase and in Girona they want to beat Las Palmas to demonstrate muscle. This Saturday's duel can be considered the first of this exceptional 11-game League and Girona is used to not losing in its premieres. Of course, in recent years they have resisted victory in the first league game. Without going further, this same season, on matchday 1 against Sporting, they could not pass the tie (1-1). And the same thing happened in the previous two seasons, both in the First, against Valladolid (0-0) and Atlético de Madrid (2-2).

To see Girona's last victory in the first league game, it is necessary to go back to the 2015-16 season. Precisely, like this time, the premiere arrived at home. It was against Bilbao Athletic and the goal of Jairo Morillas, in the 80 ', was enough to add the first three points (0-1). Two survivors remain from that meeting, Àlex Granell and Aday Benítez (Alcalá, Maffeo and Borja García did not participate), and it is the path that Girona now wants to follow to reach First by direct route.
