Ghent wins the Belgian Cup and frustrates Kompany

On Monday, Ghent won the fourth Belgian Cup in its history by beating Anderlecht 4-3 on penalties in the final, played at the King Baudouin stadium in Brussels, which ended in a goalless draw.

In this way, former Belgian defender Vincent Kompany, who during his career played for Manchester City, was unable to win his first title as coach since he took over the reins of Anderlecht in August 2020, the club where he started as a footballer and retired.

The performance of the goalkeeper Davy Roef, who had a higher percentage of stops in the maximum penalties than the ‘purple’ goalkeeper, Hendrik van Crombrugge, was ultimately decisive when he stopped the shots of the Irishman Josh Cullen and the Panamanian Michael Murillo.

Sergio Gómez converts his penalty

Anderlecht was worth nothing the success in the shootout of the Catalan Sergio Gómez (former Barça B), Benito Raman and Marco Kana.

Anderlecht, who have not won this tournament since 2008, had several chances throughout the match to clinch the crown, but just like Hein Vanhaezebrouck’s men, they squandered them.

Ghent has been left out of the playoffs for the league title, but this Cup, won twelve years after winning it against Círculo de Bruges in 2010, returns it to glory and allows it to secure its presence next season in continental competitions in the last preliminary round of the Europa League.

A spontaneous tied himself to a pole

Final interrupted by a spontaneous

The final was interrupted for a few minutes when a fan, already known for similar performances in other sports competitions, tied himself to a pole with an environmental message written on his chest and back: Aren’t our children going to die from the climate crisis? and “There is no football on a dead planet.” The game was resumed after it was withdrawn thanks to the action of firefighters and security agents.
