Germany wins basketball world champion for the first time

MADRID, 10 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The German team has been proclaimed basketball world champion for the first time in its history after beating Serbia this Sunday (83-77) in the World Cup final, played at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, closing an impeccable tournament which allows it to succeed Spain in the list of winners.

Led by Toronto Raptors point guard Dennis Schröder (23) and Orlando Magic forward Franz Wagner (19), the team led by Gordie Herbert took off in a superb third quarter – which closed with a 12-point lead – and withstood the pressure of the Balkans in the final stretch, who came within just two points.

In this way, Germany confirms the greatest success in its history and its first World Cup gold, which adds to its record the continental title achieved in the 1993 Eurobasket and the bronze medal at the 2002 World Cup, so far its peak in a global event. . In addition, it becomes the fourth European team to be crowned champion, after the USSR, Yugoslavia and Spain.
