German soccer legend Uwe Seeler dies at 85

MADRID, 21 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Former German soccer player Uwe Seeler died this Thursday at the age of 85, one of the best players in the history of soccer in his country, scorer and honorary captain of Germany.

“The world of football is in mourning following the death of one of the greatest players Germany has ever produced, Uwe Seeler, at the age of 85,” FIFA said in a statement.

Seeler scored 43 goals in 72 games for the German senior team and played his entire career at Hamburg, from 1954 to 1972. Both the German Football Federation and the club where he became a football great lamented the loss of “a legend “.

With the Mannschaft, Seeler participated in four World Cups and scored in all of them, a streak equaled only by Pelé, Miroslav Klose and Cristiano Ronaldo, and captained the national team 40 times, including the 1966 final.
