The British cyclist Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers) has conquered this Sunday the 85th edition of the Tour de Suisse after the dispute of the eighth and last stage, an individual time trial of 25.6 kilometers through the streets of Vaduzm in which the Belgian prevailed Remco Evenepoel (QuickStep-AlphaVinyl).
The 2018 Tour de France champion started the time trial two seconds behind Sergio Higuita (Bora-Hansgrohe), but the one from Cardiff fulfilled the forecasts and removed the Colombian from the throne to keep the yellow jersey of the Swiss round.
Thus, Thomas showed off his specialty in the individual fight, with the second fastest time of the day, while his rival for the general finished eleventh. The Swiss Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) was in third position at 11 seconds.
With a time of 28:26, Evenepoel took the stage victory with a pace unattainable for the other cyclists. His great time allowed him to add his ninth victory of the season and number 31 in his record. In fact, Thomas was the closest to the Belgian with a difference of three seconds, although his effort was enough to take the general.
The coronavirus hit the last stage and three-time world champion Peter Sagan (UCI ProTeam) tested positive for coronavirus, the third time in 18 months, and had to leave the Tour de Suisse.
Now, the runners already have the Tour de France on their horizon, which will take place from July 1 to 24 of the same month. In total, three weeks of the best cycling in the world that will start in Copenhagen (Denmark) and end on the Champs-Elysées.
