Gareth Barry, indicted by the FA

The former England player and the Premier League Gareth Barry has been indicted by the country’s Football Association (FA) for allegedly violating its rules in relation to the “ownership and / or financing” of League Two’s Swindon Town.

The FA says Barry, the most capped player in Premier League history at 653 in two decades, allegedly violated its regulations on working with intermediaries.

Proceedings were initiated in April against Swindon’s owner and president, Lee Power, First Touch Pro Management, and the company’s director, Michael Standing, Barry’s former agent.

Power alleged in court last year that Barry agreed to invest 800,000 pounds ($ 1.07 million) in Swindon in 2013 through Standing and would be entitled to 50% of the proceeds from any increase in the club’s value.

The FA prohibits agents from owning clubs to avoid conflicts of interest. The BBC said Barry, 40, had denied the allegations.

“Swindon Town FC, Lee Power, First Touch Pro Management, Michael Standing and Gareth Barry have until Wednesday, December 1, 2021 to respond to their respective charges,” the FA said in a statement.

Barry, who made 53 appearances for England, played for clubs in Aston Villa, Manchester City, Everton and West Bromwich Albion before retiring last year.
