The Spanish-Venezuelan tennis player Garbiñe Muguruza became the first of the ‘Armada’ to overcome the first round of the US Open, fourth and last ‘Grand Slam’ of the season, after beating the Danish Clara Tauson in two sets by 6-3, 7-6(5).
In this way, the one from Caracas gets off to a good start in the ‘big’ that has been the worst in her career, with the round of 16 in 2017 and 2021 as the best result, and gains confidence after a season that is proving quite complicated and without much good results.
The double champion of ‘Grand Slam’ had to work her pass to the second round, especially due to the resistance offered by Tauson in a second set where she raised a break against and then had good options to take the duel to a final third, situations that were raised with temperance and supported in his serve (10 ‘aces’) by the pupil of Conchita Martínez.
Muguruza signed an excellent first set, where his aggressiveness was rewarded with 13 winners and losing only seven points with his serve, almost all in a third game where he faced two break balls. The Spanish-Venezuelan saved them and then broke her rival’s serve, an advantage that she did not waste to get ahead.
The match became more even in the second set, despite the fact that Tauson had to receive medical attention to his right knee. The Dane could not avoid losing her serve, but she knew how to react to recover it instantly against a more erratic Muguruza in her blows than in the first set.
The outlook darkened even for the ninth seed in New York, who at 4-5 ran into a threatening 0-40. Tauson’s serve and nerves came to the rescue and she finally had to decide a ‘tie-break’ where the Dane didn’t take advantage of her best start either to end up giving in.
