Gabi retires: “Thank you, football, for allowing me to be eternal in the memory of many people”

Gabi Fernández, former Atlético footballer, has announced his retirement as a professional footballer. The 37-year-old midfielder left his last team, Qatari Al Sadd, in June and today confirmed his goodbye to the pitch through a statement in Instagram. Does not give clues about his professional future (Yes about the staff: “now I have to take care of mine”), although they have always been linked to Atlético de Madrid.

The historical 14, who played 417 games for the rojiblanca, won six titles and was captain for six seasons, left the club in 2018 in search of one last challenge in Qatar, along with Xavi Hernández. After finishing this last June, it was speculated that he could join Simeone's coaching staff, since the Monkey Burgos came out of him in search, also, of new challenges.

“When I started playing soccer I never imagined that my dreams would come true. Today has come the day to put an end to my career as a footballer.

I wanted to thank all the people who have been part of this path, from all my teammates, coaches, workers of all teams and, of course, my family and friends, because they have never let me collapse in moments of difficulty.

Also to all that hobby that has demanded and also encouraged me to be better, not only on the field, but also outside of it.

Finally to you FOOTBALL, for giving me the opportunity to be eternal in the memory of many people (without a doubt the largest heritage I have ever acquired).

Now I have to take care of mine. Thank you all!”.
