From Antonio Banderas to the Royal House, Pedro Sánchez and Feijóo: goodbye to the great Carlos Saura

Spanish cinema is in mourning due to the death of Carlos Saura, who died this Friday, February 10, in Madrid at 91 after respiratory failure. The director, one of the most important filmmakers in the history of our cinema, received the Goya de Honor 2023 at his home a few days ago. This Saturday, the Film Academy will pay him its well-deserved tribute at the Goya ceremony, which will take place celebrated in Seville.

The reactions to his death have not been long in coming. Antonio Banderasone of the highest standards of Spanish cinema, has written on his social networks: “A very important part of the history of Spanish cinema dies with Carlos Saura. He leaves behind an essential work for deep reflection on the behavior of the human being. Rest in peace my friend.”

The actor Daniel Guzman He has also pronounced: “What tremendous sadness. Today one of the most important references of our country leaves us. A free and unique filmmaker who dissected our history and our society with his filmography. Today the teacher leaves. Thank you Carlos Saura for everything what you gave us and taught us”. The singer Anthony Carmona has lamented: “Carlos Saura left, a pioneer and someone who gave flamenco a deep vision. Ketama and Manzanita are part of this wonderful film called Flamenco directed by him. Goodbye teacher.”

The political world has also conveyed its condolences. The president of the Government, Pedro Sanchezhas expressed: “Carlos Saura, a fundamental figure of Spanish culture, leaves us. His talent is and will always be a cultural heritage of our history thanks to unforgettable films such as Oh, Carmela o Cousin Angelica. We say goodbye to the director of the imagination, but we have his cinema left “. The leader of the opposition, Alberto Núñez Feijóohas pointed out: “Carlos Saura, an indispensable figure in the history of our cinema, has left us. My love to his family and to the entire family of cinematographic arts”.

The second vice president of the Government, Yolanda Diazhas also mourned the loss of the director of Oh, Carmela!: “He left before the applause, leaving behind him a legacy of capital films to understand the Spanish culture of the 20th century and its international footprint. Thank you Saura for the beauty, the honest look and that commitment of yours with the cinema and the TRUE”. Monica Garcialeader of Más Madrid, added: “Carlos Saura, one of the essentials of our culture, has left us. A brave filmmaker to whom we owe so much and whose perspective is fundamental to understanding our country today.”

The House of His Majesty the King also had a few words for the director, a native of Huesca: “Your cinema will never die. Goodbye, Carlos Saura.”

On October 6, the Academy announced its Goya de Honor. “Thanks to the Academy, I receive this award with great joy and enthusiasm. I am 90 years old and I will be 91 in January and there are more than 50 films, including feature films and documentaries, that have filled a large part of my life as a professional: the other one has been my six sons and my daughter Ana”, she transmitted in a letter that two of her children read at the Academy, Antonio and her own Well. That October 6, Saura did not go to the Film Academy in Madrid, suffering from the fall for which he did not attend the San Sebastián Film Festival weeks ago.
