Frenkie de Jong, protagonist in the triumph of the Netherlands

Memphis Depay did not play (to test other players, Louis van Gaal changed the entire team that won 1-4 to Belgium), but the Netherlands is still on a roll after beating Wales on Wednesday in Cardiff in the 94th minute (1- 2), leading Group 4 of League A of the Nations League. Substitute to start, Frenkie de Jong did come on, in the 67th minute to relieve Jerdy Shouten, and was the protagonist by ‘manufacturing’ the winning goal play in the 94th minute.

The Welsh party, which in its own Cardiff City Stadium qualified for the Qatar 2022 World Cup on Sunday after defeating Ukraine (1-0), could not continue against the Dutch.

The goal was hard to come by, but Teun Koopmeiners finally put the Netherlands ahead in the 50th minute. The Atalanta pivot received the ball from Schouten on the edge of the area and with a self-pass he connected a shot to the far post that beat Adam Davies. Koopmeiners himself had had another opportunity shortly before.

Wales tried to level the score but couldn’t do so until an epic late game. It was 92 ‘when Rhys Norrington-Davies, who had created problems for the ‘oranje’ on the flank, equalized with a header, taking advantage of a ball from Connor Roberts.

But Van Gaal’s men, who have gone 11 games without losing with him, wanted the win and in 94′, 100 seconds after Wales’ goal, Frenkie de Jong ‘made’ a move that, assisted by Tyrell Malacia, culminated in Wout Weghorst with a header to give victory to the ‘oranje’. De Jong drove from the back, made a wall with Bergwijn and enabled Malacia.

Wales, a World Cup player for the first time in 64 years, debuted with defeat in the current Nations League. The Netherlands is leader of the group, with 6 points, 3 more than Belgium and Poland. Ukraine closes the table.
