Freddy Rincón, former Colombian soccer player for Real Madrid, dies

The historic midfielder of the ‘coffee maker’ team has died at the age of 55 due to a traffic accident

The former Colombian soccer player, who played in the ranks of Real Madrid in the 1990s, Freddy Rincón died this morning after suffering a traffic accident last Monday, “despite all the efforts made” by the medical team, according to informed the Quirónsalud Group Imbanaco Clinic in a statement this Thursday.

“The Quirónsalud Group Imbanaco Clinic, with prior authorization and in the company of their relatives, is allowed to inform the public that despite all the efforts made by our medical and healthcare team, the patient Freddy Eusebio Rincón Valencia, has died today 13 April 2022,” the medical center said.

Rincón suffered a “severe” head injury this Monday in a traffic accident in the Colombian city of Cali, in which four other people were injured. A video of what happened would show the Colombian skipping a traffic light and crashing into a bus.

The former player was immediately transferred to the hospital where the forecasts about his state of health are very worrying. Rincón had to urgently go through the operating room for “severe head trauma” and “his conditions are critical,” Laureano Quintero, the medical chief of the Imbanaco Clinic, said at a press conference.

Rincón underwent emergency surgery for almost three hours and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit, but his health did not improve, always with “ventilation and hemodynamic assistance and under permanent supervision.”

“We deeply regret this sensitive event, while we extend our deepest condolences to family, friends, relatives and followers. There will never be a way to express what this really means to us, we invite the entire country to remember it with joy for everything that he gave us in life with his sporting achievements”, desired the clinic after the death of the former soccer player, who was international with his country with which he participated in the 1990, 1994 and 1998 World Cups.

Real Madrid, the club in which the former international midfielder played in the 1995-1996 season, lamented in a statement “deeply” the death of the Colombian. “Real Madrid wants to express its condolences and its love and affection to all his relatives, his teammates and coaches, his clubs and all his loved ones. And he extends his condolences to all of Real Madrid,” he said.

Freddy Rincón, who also played for other clubs such as Napoles, Palmeiras, Corinthians, América de Cali or Independiente Santa Fe, won a Club World Cup and two Brazilian Leagues; two Colombian Leagues and a Colombian Cup.
