Four stumbles to the first and the eighths as a border

Real Zaragoza, six times Cup champion, he has been in the Second Division for nine seasons and since his relegation in 2013, the last year he reached the quarterfinals, his balance in the KO tournament is quite negative. Up to four times, all of them consecutively, were eliminated first by teams of the same category and his greatest success took place in the 2019-20 academic year, when he reached the round of 16 against Real Madrid.

In the first of these nine seasons in the Second Division, more specifically In the 2013-14 academic year, Zaragoza was eliminated at the first time by Alavés in Mendizorroza with a goal from Borja Viguera in the discount. In the following three campaigns more of the same, with three other executioners of the same category: Albacete (1-0), Llagostera (1-2) and Valladolid (1-2).

Already in the course 2017-18, Zaragoza finally had a worthy performance in the Copa del Rey with Natxo González on the bench. After eliminating in the first two eliminatory to Granada (3-0) and Lugo (1-0) in La Romareda, was measured again against a First Division team, in this case at Valencia in a back-and-forth showdown. It was the round of 16 and the Aragonese lost both games: 0-2 at La Romareda and 4-1 at Mestalla.

A season later In 2018-19, Zaragoza eliminated Deportivo (2-1), but in the next round they were defeated against Cádiz in La Romareda (0-1). The same did not happen in 2019-20. With Víctor Fernández at the helm, the Aragonese eliminated Socuéllamos (0-1) and Nástic de Tarragona (1-3) before facing a Primera like Mallorca in the round of 32, winning 3-1. Real Madrid played in the second round and La Romareda dressed up, on a night that was reminiscent of those historic qualifiers not so many years ago. Zaragoza, launched towards Primera and with an eleven plagued by substitutes, was defeated by 0-4, lor that it did not prevent the party in the stands. The fans, convinced of the promotion at that time, even forced the team to take a walk around the field.

Last season, the Aragonese team also overcame the first round, in this case against Gimnástica de Torrelavega, with goals from Iván Azón and Francho in extra time. It was the debut of Juan Ignacio Martínez as coach of Real Zaragoza, who in the next round was eliminated in Santo Domingo by Alcorcón (2-1). Now, the Aragonese start a new journey in Copa against the Messenger, in a totally unprecedented duel.
