Formula 1, the second sport with the most conversation on Twitter in Spain in 2021

MADRID, 6 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The fever for Formula 1 continues to increase and it is already the second sport with the highest volume of conversation on Twitter, surpassed only by football, in 2021 in Spain, which is the sixth country in the world in which the most is tweeted on the subject , according to data provided by the social network.

Formula 1, the most prestigious competition in world motorsports, has more and more followers through social networks. During 2021, more than 70 million tweets were published about the sport, 63 percent more than in 2020.

This phenomenon responds to several factors, such as the return of Fernando Alonso (Alpine) or the success of Netflix’s ‘great circus’ docuseries, which have brought the sport closer to a younger audience. Spain is the sixth country where Formula 1 is most tweeted about, with 4.5 million Tweets registered in 2021, 47 percent more than in the previous year and 6 percent of the global conversation on the social network.

The Senior Partner Manager of Twitter Spain, Dana Alonso, recognizes the good moment of Formula 1 in Spain. “Although we have to wait until the end of the season to have a more approximate estimate of the volume of conversation this year, we can assure you that F1 is experiencing a very sweet moment in our country, marked by the expertise of Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz at the wheel, as well as the duel between the two great rivals Leclerc and Verstappen for the leadership of the World Cup. We are sure that when the grandstands of the circuits go crazy it will also be reflected on Twitter”, he commented.

In May 2022, the 79th edition of the Spanish Grand Prix was held, where Max Verstappen won and the conversation about this sport on Twitter increased in Spain by 192 percent compared to the previous year, surpassing football during that weekend to be the most talked about sport.

The accounts that were mentioned the most were those of the drivers Fernando Alonso (@alo_oficial), Carlos Sáinz (@carlossainz55) and Charles Leclerc (@Charles_Leclerc) and those of the Alpine (@alpinef1team), Ferrari (@scuderiaferrari) and Mercedes ( @mercedesamgf1).

The trend continued to increase and during the week of the Monaco Grand Prix, held on May 29, the volume increased by 13 per cent compared to Montmeló, reaching the peak during the race on Sunday, where there was more than 38 per cent of the whole interaction.

The public that comments on Formula 1 on Twitter has a young profile, since more than 65 percent of those who write are under 35 years old and are very diverse in the rest of their interests, ranging from politics, to music or the entertainment In addition, the success of ‘Formula 1: Drive to Survive’ on Netflix has contributed to this type of fan getting hooked on the sport of single-seaters.
