MADRID, 20 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Formula 1 has become the first motorsport championship in which all member teams have obtained the FIA ’ThreeStar’ environmental accreditation, the highest level of recognition of environmental sustainability by the body.
All the World Cup teams achieved the maximum environmental accreditation, three stars, while Formula 1 itself renewed its distinction to advance the ‘Net Zero’ objective for 2030 and make history as the first championship fully qualified by those 3 stars.
The FIA Environmental Accreditation Program was launched in 2011 to help the motorsport industry assess and improve its environmental performance, and measures performance across a series of 17 criteria ranging from energy use and waste management the supply chain to transport planning, noise management and carbon emissions.
To maintain impartiality in the accreditation audit process, audits are carried out by an independent qualified auditor.
The Formula One World Championship first gained accreditation in 2020 and since then many of the sport’s major stakeholders, including teams, race promoters and host circuits, have also embarked on their own trips to achieve FIA Three Star Environmental Accreditation.
In addition to the ten F1 teams, Pirelli, a global partner of Formula 1 and a key supplier to the World Championship, also has three-star environmental accreditation.
Several race promoters and host circuits have achieved the highest level of accreditation, including events in Italy, Spain, Belgium, Austria and the United Arab Emirates, with the UK, Japan and Singapore also currently holding accreditation at some level.
Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali said it is a “significant moment” to achieve this milestone and that it demonstrates the ongoing commitment of the entire F1 community to change to achieve sustainability goals.
“There is still a lot of work to be done, but we are committed to achieving our goals, continuing to innovate sustainably and setting a positive example to the motorsport community and beyond,” he added.
