Former Israeli soccer player Lior Asulin died on Sunday at the age of 43 during an attack by the terrorist group Hamas in the city of Re’im (Israel) while celebrating his birthday, one of his former teams, Hapoel Tel Aviv, has confirmed.
“With great sadness, after many hours in which he was declared missing, we announce that the former player of our club Lior Asulin was murdered by terrorists at a party in Re’im. Hapoel Tel Aviv Football Club sends its condolences to the members of Lior’s family at this difficult time,” the entity announced.
The former player was celebrating his birthday with friends and family in a hotel in the city in southern Israel, near the Gaza Strip, when about 50 members of the Islamic terrorist group entered the premises. There were no survivors.
Asulin spent almost his entire sporting career in Israel, except for a half-year period in the Cypriot league. He played, among others, for Maccabi Herzliya, Hapoel Tel Aviv or Hapoel Be’er Sheva.
After scoring 88 goals in 284 games, he retired in 2017 at Hapoel Nazareth Illit. In addition, he won the Israel Cup with Bnei Sakhnin in 2004.
