First exam for the ‘Hispanics’ in the European Championship

Spain measures to the powerful Germany in search of making sure to pass with points to the 'Main Round'

MADRID, 10 Jan. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish handball team will face this Saturday (18.15 hours) their second match in the Men's European Championship, which is held in Norwegian, Swedish and Austrian lands, for a high-level duel against a powerful rival like Germany, and which can also be key to secure points facing a hypothetical access to the 'Main Round'.

The current champion signed a debut from less to more against Latvia, which she ended up defeating by a comfortable 33-22, and now she must prepare for a hard, physical and mental battle against the German team. It will be a clash between the last two continental champions and they have lived countless encounters always full of tension.

Some of them have occurred in these last four years. In the 2016 European Championship, Spain started the tournament well, winning the Germans 32-29, but then fell clearly in the final (17-24) and crashed before one of the virtues of its rival, its powerful defense in 6/0.

The revenge of this defeat came in the European past (31-27), but the last duel between the two, in the last World Cup, was also for a tight 31-30 for the current Olympic bronzes, which in that last great competition touched the podium (quarters).

This Saturday will almost again be a competitive match, where defensive strength and counterattack will be the weapons of both teams. Those of Jordi Ribera, despite the expulsions of Jorge Maqueda and Viran Morros, went from less to more in the first facet against Latvia and were able to throw to their extremes.

Spain must have maximum patience to attack the defense of the pupils of Christian Prokop, who come with several casualties to the tournament and winners also in its premiere comfortably against the Netherlands for a similar result (34-23).

If the Germans feel safe behind, their always solvent goal (Wolff and Bitter) grows. In attack, the Gensheimer end, the work of his pivots (Wiencek, Kohlbacher and Pekeler), and the threat from outside players like Häfner and Kühn are his threats.
