The Champions League could undergo a revolutionary change in its format from the 2024-25 season. According to the British newspaper ‘The Times’both UEFA and the European Club Association (ACE), chaired by Nasser Al-Khelaifi, would be looking favorably on implementing the concept of a ‘Final Four’ to resolve future editions of the Champions League.
Adapting the format of other competitions such as the Euroleague basketball or european cup handball, the UEFA it would try to implement a single venue to resolve the semifinals and the final of the star tournament of European football. In what would be considered ‘SOCCER WEEK’the semifinals and the final would be played as a single match in a period of one week.
This new proposal would resemble the one that UEFA had to implement in the summer 2020 to solve the edition of the Champions of that year. With the origin of the pandemic, the competitions had to be temporarily suspended and as an emergency solution, it was decided to play in Lisboa most of the remaining encounters to be resolved.
The quarterfinals and semifinals were played in a single match. On that occasion, Bayern were champions after defeating PSG by the minimum (1-0).
If the concept of the ‘Final Four’, this would not be the only change in the format of the competition. As already reported in his day MD, the 2024-25 Champions League will be the first edition in which significant changes are applied with respect to the format of recent decades. All the details here.
