Carlos Saura He died this Friday in Madrid due to respiratory failure at the age of 91. His death occurred just 48 hours before receiving the 2023 Goya de Honor in recognition of his extraordinary film career, fundamental in the history of Spanish cinema.
“Thanks to the Academy, I receive this award with great joy and enthusiasm. I am 90 years old and I will be 91 in January and there are more than 50 films, including feature films and documentaries, that have filled a large part of my life as a professional: the other one has been my six sons and my daughter Ana”, were the words of the filmmaker when he found out about the award that the Goyas would give him this Saturday, February 11, in Seville.
The Huesca director won the Goya for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for ‘Oh, Carmela!’ and the Gold Medal of the Academy in 1992. In addition, his films from the 70s and 80s have “opened markets and prestige” for Spanish cinema, being recognized at the most important festivals.
Saura directed movies like the gulfs, The hunt, Peppermint Frappe, Ana and the wolves, Cousin Angelica, Mom is a hundred years old, hurry up, Carmen, flamingo, flamingo, Sevillanas, the seventh day, Io Don Giovanni and Goya in Bordeaux, among other.
