FIFPRO asks clubs not to have player layoffs or pay cuts without covenants

FIFPRO thus went along with the movements made by some entities, which in these days have already handled options with reduction of salaries of the members of their staff and even temporary layoffs to correct the situation generated and the impact of Covid 19. “We call on clubs with short-term financial difficulties to meet with national player unions to negotiate fair and proportionate arrangements that respect their legal obligations and equally address the interests of the employer and the employee”, indicates the statement issued by the International Federation of Professional Footballers alerted by the strategy of some clubs. “While the cooperation of international football stakeholders encourages us, we are extremely concerned that a significant number of clubs, in more than half a dozen countries, have started to immediately fire players or unilaterally reduce their salaries” FIFPRO points out.

“In such a time of social crisis, solutions must be found with everyone's contribution. Most soccer players outside the major leagues have incomes below or below average and would be seriously affected by declining wages. “FIFPRO argues. The International Federation of Professional Footballers asks financially struggling clubs to discuss the situation with the players' unions in each country. “Professional soccer invests a large amount of revenue in sports potential. This financial model is now under pressure globally, especially in the small and medium leagues. We are committed to doing everything we can to support professional soccer and player unions in this situation “, indicates the international union of soccer players, that underlines the support to the players. “For an unprecedented period, FIFpro will employ additional resources to further intensify our efforts to support players and provide them with additional legal and psychological advice,” the note added.
