MADRID, 20 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –
FIFA expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the victims of the shooting that took place this Thursday in Auckland, in which three people died, although it clarified that it was an “isolated incident” not related to football or to the opening match of the Women’s World Cup between New Zealand and Norway, which is played in the New Zealand city.
“FIFA extends its deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims who lost their lives following the incident that occurred this morning in Auckland/Tamaki Makaurau, Aotearoa New Zealand, and our thoughts and prayers remain with those who have been injured in this tragic incident,” FIFA announced in an official statement on Thursday.
The body was informed that it was an “isolated incident” that was not related to football, so tonight’s opening match at Eden Park (Auckland) between New Zealand and Norway will take place as planned. The opening hours of the FIFA Fan Festival will be confirmed later.
President Gianni Infantino and Secretary General Fatma Samoura were in communication with the New Zealand authorities, as well as with the participating teams affected by this incident, who have also received psychological help.
