FIFA doctor dies after Nigeria-Ghana World Cup qualifier

MADRID, 30 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

A FIFA doctor died last Tuesday after the qualifying match for the Qatar World Cup between Nigeria and Ghana, played in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, after suffering a heart attack, as confirmed by the Zambia Football Association ( FACE).

Dr. Joseph Kabungo was a Zambian doctor who attended the match as an anti-doping officer. Kabungo was a doctor for both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the governing body of world football (FIFA).

The Nigerian Football Association said Kabungo’s cause of death was a heart attack, debunking reports of a beating to death by fans following riots at the stadium after the match. “That’s a lie: he died after a sudden heart attack,” they sentenced from Nigeria.

Furious Nigerian fans stormed the pitch after rivals Ghana clinched a World Cup ticket at the expense of the ‘Super Eagles’ smashing stands and part of the pitch.

Arsenal’s Thomas Partey opened the scoring in the 10th minute for Ghana before William Troost-Ekong equalized from the penalty spot, but the Ghanaians used double the value of away goals to claim their place in Qatar from end of this year.
