FIA opens investigation into Interlagos for spectator safety breaches

RÍO DE JANEIRO (BRAZIL), 6 Nov. (dpa/EP) –

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) is investigating the organizers of the Formula 1 Sao Paulo Grand Prix after spectators exceeded security zones during Sunday’s race at Interlagos.

The FIA said there were spectators in the turn one area when the cars were still on the track on Sunday. Those responsible for the track admitted deficiencies in the protocol and security measures, which the stewards of the Formula 1 race announced after a meeting.

Those responsible for the circuit, whose contract with Formula 1 was extended until 2030 before the Grand Prix weekend, have until January 30 next year to present a plan to avoid this type of incident in the future.

The race stewards also asked the FIA to re-examine what happened and check whether the measures were sufficient. They also referred the matter to the World Motor Sport Council.
