The stewards of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) returned to the Spanish driver Fernando Alonso (Alpine) the seventh place he had lost last Sunday in the United States Grand Prix after being penalized with 30 seconds for driving with the damaged car and after a claim from Haas.
After the race at the Circuit of the Americas, Haas filed a protest alleging that the Asturian car and the Mexican Sergio Pérez (Red Bull) offered unsafe conditions, but only the two-time world champion, who returned to the track after his accident with the Canadian Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) and despite the damage he was able to finish seventh, was penalized and dropped to fifteenth position.
Alpine presented allegations to this sanction warning that the American team had presented its claim too late, but the stewards denied them, for which it requested a ‘review right’ that had to be studied this Thursday in Mexico and that was estimated by the FIA, which stressed that Haas could have submitted its brief on time. “Accordingly, the stewards determine that the original protest was not admissible and therefore the decision is invalid,” he said in a statement.
“Alpine welcomes the decision made by the aforementioned stewards, whereby the number 14 car regains its seventh place finish and six race points. We look forward to continuing our collaborative work alongside the FIA to ensure the spectacle of racing is keep in the highest quality. The team now looks forward to competing this weekend at the Mexico City Grand Prix”, celebrated the French team.
In this way, Fernando Alonso adds six important points to add 71 and place himself just seven behind his teammate, Esteban Ocon, and also allows Alpine to once again have an eleven advantage over McLaren in the Constructors’ World Championship.
