Fernando Alonso: “I will help Aston Martin to shorten the time to be champion”

The Spaniard highlights the “attractive ambition” of his new team and his own “since he was a child for being the best”

MADRID, 9 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso is “ready” for his new adventure with Aston Martin, with the mentality of going “race by race” but with the aim of helping his new team to “shorten the time it takes to be champion of the world”.

“Aston Martin is taking the necessary steps to win in the near future. The team is determined to become a championship contender and will do whatever it takes to get there. This ambition is attractive to any racing driver. You see all the investment , the new factory, the talent that joins the team, and you want to be part of it”, explains the double world champion in an interview published by the English team.

The Asturian thus confesses the reason for his signing, for a team that last year was worse than his Alpine, and appreciates the opportunity of a great brand. “This is a very special opportunity for me with this team at this point in my career. I have been preparing myself physically and mentally for this challenge, and I see this project as a winner. It is a matter of time before Aston Martin wins races and championships. Do That time is as short as possible, this is my biggest challenge, but I’m ready for it,” he adds.

As a secret to get to the title, Alonso gives his keys. “We have to use our wits and be creative in everything we do. You have to reinvent yourself every season, every race, to try to outperform your competitors – this is the biggest challenge for any F1 team. It starts with an idea. But, When will it be possible? What do you need to do to make it possible? This is what you have to keep asking yourself. This is what you have to keep working for,” he confesses.

“We have the talent in this team. When we are going to compete, we need to execute each race to perfection, to maximize the results of the ingenuity that has been put into the car,” adds Alonso who, at 41, does not want to talk about last chances, in his winning goal of a third title.

“I’m not thinking about deadlines and how long it will take the team to win races. I’ll take it race by race, season by season. The important thing is that we keep making progress. We need to be happy with each other and help each other: Aston Martin helping me achieve the results and objectives that I have and myself helping the team to progress in each race, each year, to be closer and closer to the top positions”, he explains.

For Alonso, seeing Aston Martin winning the World Cup is a matter of time, a period that will help keep it as short as possible. “I will use all my experience and all my knowledge to help the team shorten the time it takes to become world champions. Will I be behind the wheel when that moment comes? Nobody knows. It is impossible to predict. But what is certain is that I will give my best”, he points out with the confidence that characterizes him.

And it is that, within the World Cup grid, self-confidence is vital. “Whatever you do in life, you have to have this competitiveness within you, you have to have this hunger to be the best. I’ve had this hunger since I was a kid. I always try to beat everyone in everything I do.” , it states.

“For many years we thought that Michael Schumacher was invincible and that he had reached a level that nobody had in the history of F1. But throughout history we have seen the dominance of different drivers, it is impossible to compare them,” he adds.

The Asturian confesses that it is always his part to give the maximum. “What I know is that I always try to give my maximum. I never lose motivation. It doesn’t matter if I’m fighting for fifth or 15th, for me it’s like fighting for victory because I have to make sure I give 100% every lap of every race,” he says.

One month before the start of the season, the Spanish rider is “ready” with a good pre-season. “I’ve been training since December. This pre-season has been much calmer than the last few years. Smooth preparation is very important, especially with a new team. Everything changes and learning takes time,” he says.

On the other hand, Alonso sees his new teammate Lance Stroll as a “fast and talented” driver. “I have known him for 11 years, when he was in the Ferrari academy. We are good friends. I have been to his house in Canada several times. He has shown his qualities many times,” he ends about the American.
