Felipe Orts and Lucía González aspire to their seventh Spanish Cyclocross Championship in As Pontes

MADRID, 8 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish cyclists Felipe Orts and Lucía González, dominators of the discipline in recent years, will face this weekend a Spanish cyclocross Championship in which they start as favorites and which could give them their seventh national titles on Lake As Pontes ( to Coruña).

The championship will begin to mark the final stretch of the season in the modality, crowning the best national specialists in the cadet, junior, sub23, elite and master categories, in addition to establishing the Spanish Team Relay champion on Friday, a test that It will be held again by regional selections.

After hosting a test of the Spanish Cyclocross Cup in 2023, As Pontes, with the organization of the As Pontes Vilalba Cycling Club, will host the most important event on the national calendar, presenting a circuit in the vicinity of the lake, which has 2600 meters long and in which runners will find fast areas, planks, stairs or a 150-meter sandbox.

The Spanish Championship will be marked, unlike the 2023 Spanish Cup, by mud and rain, one more component to heighten the spectacle during the weekend, and in which Felipe Orts and Lucía González will try to continue with their triumphant streak defending national champion jerseys that they have already won six times.

Thus, in the elite men’s event the spotlight will once again be inevitably pointed at the best Spanish cyclo-crosser in history, Felipe Orts, who will try to seek his seventh elite title to continue adding to a national record that is practically unmatched. Orts would thus surpass the six titles that José Luis Talamillo and David Seco also have.

The man from Alicante has once again improved his performance this season, establishing himself among the elite of the discipline at an international level. Orts has achieved his best international results this year, being runner-up in Europe in Galicia itself (Pontevedra) and getting on the podium in the Hulst World Cup, where he was second, the best result ever for a Spaniard, and in the Cup of Dublin World (3rd).

Along with Orts, the list of candidates for the title will once again be made up of riders such as the Cantabrian Kevin Suárez, who was left off the podium last year; Gonzalo Inguanzo, second in 2024; Mario Junquera, third in the last edition; or other notable names such as XCO Olympian Jofre Cullell or Aitor Hernández.

EQUAL TO AIDA NUÑO

In the female category, Lucía González will fight to achieve her seventh Spanish champion title, with which she would equal the national record holder until now, the also Asturian Aida Nuño.

González, a great dominator in recent years, will have as her main rival in this edition her teammate at Nesta, Sofía Rodríguez, who has been completing a great season, obtaining victories even ahead of González, like last weekend in Amurrio.

Among the contenders for victory it is also worth including Sara Cueto, third in the Spanish Cup; the Balearic Lucía Gómez, Sara Bonillo or Alicia González.
