Feliciano López: “The Davis Cup is the only competition in which the public has a determining role”

The director of the Finals does not “see a favorite” before traveling to Malaga with the ‘Ensaladera’ by AVE

MADRID, 16 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The director of the Davis Cup Finals, Feliciano López, expressed this Thursday his confidence that the 2023 finals will be a “success”, even improving on the previous year, and believes that Davis is “a special competition” because it is the only one in which the public has “a determining role”.

“The Davis Cup is a special competition, in which the public has a determining role. The objective of the competition is for people to be involved, and in Malaga there will be a lot of public supporting their teams,” commented Feliciano López, director of the tournament, during the event in which the Davis Cup trophy traveled from Madrid to Malaga in a sustainable way with Renfe.

The five-time Davis Cup winner and current tournament director stated that for the competition it is “a pleasure to be in Malaga again.” Regarding the tournament, Feliciano believes that Davis has been “the competition in which there are the most surprises.” “Nerves and representing your country mean that there are players who are positively affected and others the opposite. That’s why we see many surprises. The last few years have been a reflection of the circuit, where we have gone from three dominant players to now, “There is only one left, which is Novak, who will be in Malaga. That’s why I don’t see favorites,” he added.

At the event in which the ‘Salad Bowl’ was transported from Madrid to Malaga, the General Secretary of Sports of the Government of Andalusia, José María Arrabal, pointed out that Andalusia “lives a love story with tennis.” “We want this story to last forever and the world tennis family to find its home in Andalusia. That is why we have opted for legendary competitions such as the Davis Cup and the Billie Jean King Cup, which allow us to generate a legacy,” he said.

The president of the International Tennis Federation (ITF), David Hagerty, also participated, thanking Malaga and Spain for the “bet” they are making on tennis. Finally, the Deputy Delegate of Sports of Malaga, Juan Rosas, intervened; the Councilor for Sports of the Malaga City Council, Borja Vivas; and the president of Renfe, Raül Blanco.

“Renfe is the Spanish sports train, but today it is international. We share the values of sports and continually support sports such as basketball, handball, rugby and today tennis. We are delighted to be the transport of the Davis Cup and accompany the great impact it has,” commented Blanco.

The president of Renfe highlighted that the hallmark of the railway company is “quality”, “sustainability” and reaching more provincial capitals than the rest of the competitors, along with having “robust” collaborators like Davis.
