FEDME shows its support for Iranian climber Elnaz Rekabi

MADRID, 18 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish Federation of Mountain and Climbing Sports (FEDME) showed on Tuesday its support for the Iranian climber Elnaz Rekabi, who would have been arrested by the Iranian regime after participating without a hijab in the Asian Championship of her discipline in South Korea on Sunday. South in support of the protests that are shaking the country over the death of the young Mahsa Amini.

“The FEDME, and all the Spanish athletes of all disciplines, as well as coaches, trainers and technical bodies, want to show their full support for Elnaz Rekabi and hope and wish that the athlete can continue competing both in her country and in the multiple competitions in which he usually participates, and that he does so with total freedom of expression, in all its senses,” the federation said in a statement.

In this sense, the FEDME stressed its concern about the news that has been known about Rekabi and “they trust that their rights will be respected and their freedom of expression will not be violated once they return to their country of origin.”

“The entire FEDME family trusts that this fact will not have consequences of any kind for them, as well as for all Iranian athletes and federative bodies, and that sport and sports competition continue to be a place where athletes, of all countries, races, nationalities and cultures, can demonstrate their skills by competing without anything tarnishing their sporting achievements,” the statement concludes.
